因为根据美军地面作战情况，一般都是掌握了绝对的制空权的情况下才使用陆军投入作战，而且战场正面突击的时候又是以M1系列的主战坦克为先导，也可以随时呼叫空中支援（火炮或者直升机），所以美军的步兵战车面对的作战环境相对较好，主要的威胁是一些零星的地雷、RPG火箭筒、炮弹破片，而不是和敌人装甲师面对面，同时战车本身的活力要求也可以低一点。小口径的火炮灵活（面对零散的活力），而且可以携带更多的弹药。
